Pakistan blocks YouTube access - report
By MarketWatch - Last update: 12:53 p.m. EST Feb. 24, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The government of Pakistan has blocked access to YouTube because of video clips posted on the popular Web site that officials considered anti-Islamic, according to a media report.
The country's 70 Internet service providers have been told by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority that access to the Web site would be blocked until further notice, the Associated Press reported, citing an unnamed source.
Among the video clips considered offensive was a movie trailer for an upcoming film by Dutch politician Geert Wilders, the report said. Wilders has said he plans to release a movie that portrays Islam as fascist and tends to incite violence against women and homosexuals, the report said.

The US and UK governments are developing increasingly sophisticated gadgets to keep individuals under their surveillance. When it comes to technology, the US is determined to stay ahead of the game.

New report warns some nations imposing too many rules on Internet use VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- Kazakhstan and Georgia are among countries imposing excessive restrictions on how people use the Internet, a new report says, warning that regulations are having a chilling effect on freedom of expression.
''Governing the Internet,'' issued Thursday by the 56-nation Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, called the online policing ''a bitter reminder of the ease with which some regimes -- democracies and dictatorships alike -- seek to suppress speech that they disapprove of, dislike, or simply fear.''
''Speaking out has never been easier than on the Web. Yet at the same time we are witnessing the spread of Internet censorship,'' the report said.
