World Water Day 2008 will be celebrated by the UN on Thursday, 20 March. In 2008 the day will highlight issues on sanitation in accordance with the International Year of Sanitation 2008. People around the world are encouraged to celebrate the day to draw attention to the world’s sanitation challenge. HRH the Prince of Orange will attend the celebrations in Geneva.
22 maart 2008: Wereldwaterdag De Verenigde Naties hebben Wereldwaterdag in het leven geroepen om jaarlijks op 22 maart aandacht te vragen voor de waterproblematiek in de wereld. In 2008 staat de dag in het teken van Sanitatie. Omdat 22 maart dit jaar op de zaterdag voor Pasen valt vindt, in tegenstelling tot eerdere berichtgeving, de viering van Wereldwaterdag in Nederland plaats op dinsdag 18 maart 2008. Het is in Nederland vanzelfsprekend om water uit de kraan te drinken. In veel ontwikkelingslanden is dat wel even anders. Daar lopen vrouwen en kinderen vaak uren per dag om water te halen. En dat water is lang niet altijd schoon.

Afval kent vele gezichten
Op afstand lijkt het een sobere opstelling van drie eenvoudig ontworpen, maar elegante jurken. Uitgevoerd in drie op elkaar aansluitende kleuren. Van dichtbij laten ze hun ware aard zien. Dan blijken ze gemaakt te zijn van gebruikte plastic waterzakjes. Een ode aan de schoonheid van afval?
Het is een project van Marlijn Franken, een Amsterdamse kunstenaar die actief is op de grenslijn tussen kunst en design. Het is in 2005 in Bénin, West-Afrika, ontstaan. Franken nam daar deel aan de biënnale ‘Boulev’art'. Ze werd getroffen door de waterzakjes die ze overal in goten zag liggen. Bovendien besefte ze onmiddellijk de achterliggende betekenis ervan. Voor veel Afrikanen is water niet alleen een kostbaar goed, als het al beschikbaar is, dan is het vaak ongeschikt als drinkwater. Verpakt water is haast letterlijk van levensbelang. Terug in Amsterdam maakte ze haar eerste jurk van plastic zakjes. Een proefmodel. Het miste nog de uitstraling van de latere ontwerpen. In de loop der tijd kreeg het project er een dimensie bij. Omdat Franken veel meer ‘materiaal' nodig had, ontstond er al snel een uitwisseling met allerlei Afrikaanse kunstenaars in diverse landen. Aanvankelijk was dat contact louter praktisch. Het ging echter automatisch over in een uitwisseling van ideeën en gedachten. In een aantal gevallen kwamen er vriendschappen voor het leven uit voort. ‘WATER=LIFE' werd meer dan de artistieke uiting van een betrokken kunstenaar.
Inmiddels reist het project langs verschillende tentoonstellingsruimtes in verschillende landen. In verschillende gedaantes ook, omdat het voor Franken een uitdaging is het aan de beschikbare ruimte aan te passen. Het is eveneens te zien geweest in het land waar het eens zijn oorsprong vond. In Galerie 23 wordt het getoond samen met een video, een documentaire over de fabricage, het gebruik en de noodzaak van waterzakjes. Een tekstvaandel vertelt het persoonlijke verhaal van Franken. De installatie wordt gecompleteerd met een verzameling gevulde waterzakjes. Een klein monument van leven.

International Year of Sanitation - The United Nations officially launched the International Year of Sanitation to accelerate progress for 2.6 billion people world wide who are without proper sanitation facilities. The International Year of Sanitation logo was unveiled and the IYS public service announcement as well as the message of Gareth Thomas of the Department for International Development UK viewed. The launch of IYS, which runs through 2008, was organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) in collaboration with the UN-Water Task Force on Sanitation.
WATERTOALL - In 2002, during his professorship for new media art at the State School of Art and Design in Karlsruhe, artist Uwe Laysiepen (Ulay) initiated the multidimensional art project . At the heart of this project lies Laysiepen's desire to visualise a range of aspects connected with drinking water, e.g. the management and use of water, the availability of pure drinking water for people worldwide, alternative methods of collecting and distributing water, and last but not least cultural values and rituals concerning water.
IBM Shops for Dutch Water-Tech R&D- Tuesday, May 08, 2007 Where better than the Netherlands to go shopping for the latest in water-management technology? Yesterday IBM, which is trying to get more deeply involved in the high-tech management of commercial water systems, went shopping for Dutch research and commercial partners, offering a reported $10 million to codevelop technologies. On IBM's shopping list: intelligent irrigation, peak water-demand management tools, and smart sensor networks that improve water quality. Ultimately, IBM hopes to forge what it calls a "collaborative information framework" for water management. IBM aired the offer at a meeting in Delft that was organized by the Netherlands Water Partnership.
The International Water Management Institute is a nonprofit scientific research organization focusing on the sustainable use of water and land resources in agriculture and on the water needs of developing countries. IWMI works with partners in the South to develop tools and methods to help these countries eradicate poverty through more effective management of their water and land resources.

WHO Guidelines for drinking-water quality Drinking-water quality is an issue of concern for human health in developing and developed countries world-wide. The risks arise from infectious agents, toxic chemicals and radiological hazards. Experience highlights the value of preventive management approaches spanning from water resource to consumer. WHO produces international norms on water quality and human health in the form of guidelines that are used as the basis for regulation and standard setting, in developing and developed countries world-wide.
